Bombuzal

Imageworks (198?).

This one is slightly reminiscent of the later Bomberman crossed with Squeek. Although without the multiplayer fun. You control a blue blob with a very red nose and some peculiarly human like arms and legs. A freak in laymans terms. A genetic mutant. Kind of like Bertie Bassett, but without the liquorice allsorts sweeties. The basic premise of the game is to set off a lot of explosives (careful now children!) in a world where real estate is hard to come by. Er yes, there are a few tiles for you to stand on, and you have to blow up most of them. The idea is to rid the screen of bombs (very noble indeed). However blowing yourself up as well is frowned upon (take note suicide bombers) and you loose a life. So you have to strategically set off bombs so they don't kill you. Or set off other bombs. Which will kill you. To further complicate things there are several different types of tiles from ones that are bomb proof to others that disintergrate after you step on them.
This is one of those puzzle games that you'll find enthralling and challenging; or will have you pulling your hair with frustrating and throwing your joystick around the room. The graphics are colourful and reasonably well drawn. The sound is downright awful however, with an earsplitting opening tune and some low quality samples letting the side down. A mixed bag but might be worth a look if you like this kind off thing.
