Hellfire

Millipede

Atari 1986 . Programmed by Andromeda

Centipede on the Atari 2600 is one of my favourite all time games, but as of yet , I've never got round to playing it's sequel, Millipede. Unfortunately this early conversion for the ST is a bit of a dissapointment. As usual the goal of the game is to blast the, in this case, millipede, approaching from the top of the screen. However as you try to do this a whole host of natures creepy crawlies are trying to stop you. Everything from spiders flies and beetles is not happy with your attempt at insectide and they are fighting back. Everything is suicidely hectic, with sprites flying about all over the place in some desperate to create an early attempt at the most sprites on screen record. Spiders bounce around constantly and the 'pede' itself roars down the screen. Virtually everything creates mushrooms, which is very annoying as you can clean out your playing area completely only to find it completely full about three seconds later. The confusing thing about all this frantic action is that in fact the game is still incredibly easy. You can survive for several minutes without even moving the joystick as your enemies bounce around like primary school kids on high e-numbered orange chewits. When you do decide to shoot some stuff your score clocks up so rapidly that you'll easily reach the extra life points before you loose a life; so you can rapidly get to the situation where your dying every twenty seconds but getting extra lives even faster. Crazy. Graphics wise the game is nothing special, but I'm presuming it's fairly faithful to the arcade, so I can't blame it for that. Sound wise the game trys to emulate some genuine early eighties effects, and the sound of your ST doing an impression of an Atari 2600 is highly amusing. There are far better versions of Centipede/ Millipede on the ST, so I can't really recommened this one..
