Battlezone

Atari 1986

An almost arcade perfect port of the classic, minus the independant track control. There is little to fault in this version. The joystick control is fairly realistic, sluggish but then you are in a tank so what do you expect. It's not that hard to see why that bastion of democracy, the US army decided to use it for training purposes. The game is based on a simple premise. Your dropped into a wire frame 3D world and you must survive in your tank for as long as possible. Enemy tanks are unloaded by a drop ship in an attempt to kill you off and you must blast as many as possible. Initially the tanks appear just in front of you but if you survive long enough then they start appearing at the most awkward angles to get at, i.e. right behind you. It then becomes a matter of trying to out-turn your opponent. If you fancy a few extra points then you can take a few pot shots at the jump ship but watch out.. every so often the jump ship will fire heat seeking missiles at you. And that's about it. Endlessly enjoyable and seemingly ageless (at least on the gameplay front) Battlezone is a great conversion of a great game.
