Beyond the Ice Palace (Elite)

The very name brings back memories of the Neverending Story, Labyrinth and Krull for some reason. One of Elite's more memorable games this one, though dissapointingly lacking in Jim Henson puppets. An 8bit classic quest adventure alright, though those graphics clearly have been almost literally copied from the original. The graphics do move well and you are too busy listening to the rather nice soundchip music to worry to much (yes another Elite game with great chip music). The gameplay itself is pretty hard, it's vaguely reminiscent of Turrican, with the minor drawback that you can't shoot (well lob one of your unending axes/daggers) upwards. This is a major problem as you are expected to negociate your way upwards onto enemy packed platforms on regular ocassions, making the game somewhat frustrating to play (and very hard). With time though you do seem to make progress and I can see why it was such a hit.

Zogging Hell Rating: 7/10
