Whirligig (Maelstrom/ Firebird, 1988)

If I managed to get the emulator version to get any further than screen shots here I could show the spectacular mapped 3D of the Whirligig ship, or its bizarre control system. The ship rotates all over the place, in a totally needless fashion, to show off the superb 3D. Never mind of course that everything else in the game is a bog standard 2D sprite. Or that this method of rotating makes the game difficult to control. Or that this is pretty much Asteroids but with enemy ships (with totally retarded flight patterns) instead. Or the horrifically annoying homing missiles that spend more of their time chasing you. But that ship is lovely....
