Continental Circus (Virgin Mastertronic 1991)

Continental Circus, rather than being about a travelling Romanian entertainment group, is a racing game, in the style of Turbo Cup, Mansell's Formula One, Super Monaco GP et all. It's visually very attractive, and for a second you think this is one of the second generation 16bit consoles your playing this on. It also has pretty good handling, which is a pleasant suprise for an ST driving game. It's filled with tragic flaws however. Continental Circus is a little too strict on not hitting other cars. Should you even scrape one, your car starts blowing smoke and will explode in a short amount of time unless you can make it to the pits. Alright, but the pits are almost bloody impossible to get to in time, and when you do get there your much more likely to zoom past by accident. Fixing you takes a while as well, so you might as well keep going and wait till you blow up. None of this would be that bad if you could avoid actually hitting anything for more than a couple of laps. You always get stuck behind a whole heap of cars that fill the road and do their best to run into you. This of course leaves them intact but damages you. Booo! If you can get past these inherent flaws then you have the makings of a good game but...

Cheats

For a super-fast start, when the red light flashes - press up on the joystick, when the second red light comes on - release the joystick and, when the green light flashes - push up again and then remark casually about how easy clutch control in modern day race cars is, as you leave your racing buddies way behind.
