Carrier
Command (Rainbird 1988)
Carrier Command is an epic strategy game of Aircraft Carrier warfare. You are in charge of one aircraft carrier and must use your selection of planes and amphibious tanks to conquer islands. This is a race against the computer as he too has a carrier (the dirty bast!) and is out to do the same. One of the first things you notice about Carrier Command is that it's a bit slow. No, not the 3D, which although a bit simple, (be fair this was one of the best examples of early filled 3D in a game) is rather good. It's just the game pace itself. You spend ages getting to an island and then suddenly everything goes frenetic as you first try and cripple the defences and then try and reprogram the base on the island. It gets even worse if the computer player turns up at the same island as you. All of a sudden you'll find enemy planes and cruise missiles all over you. The computer player is a bit a clever sod as well, and seems to be able to conquer two islands to every one you do. It's not all larks and fighting either, theres some supply line work to sort out (which can happen quite regularly if the computer gets in amongst your supply islands). Carrier Command is great and with the cheat 'GROW OLD ALONG WITH ME', which speeds up time (+ and - also toggle immunity, so you'll be able to teach that computer gep a lesson) it's one of the best games you'll play on the ST. Zogging Hell Rating: 93%
Cheats Go into Pause Mode and type "GROW OLD ALONG WITH ME" (including spaces). You should now see the message 'Cheat mode active' displayed. Pressing the '+' key on the numeric keypad protects your Mantas and AAV's from missile attacks. The '-' key can be used to turn this off. With the cheat mode active, pressing the following keys in sequence: 'HELP', 'Q', 'S', 'CONTROL', 'ALTERNATE' gives a little message. Pressing the '9' key on the numeric keypad displays the current difficulty level, and the keys '6' and '8' have some other effect. Returning to the title screen, press the '+' and '-' keys, type "THE BEST IS YET TO BE" instead, to view all the objects in the game.
Download Download Carrier Command as a zipped file here. To decompact this file onto a DD floppy, you will need ST Zip downloadable from here. Emulator users will have to copy the un-zipped files onto a blank *.ST or *.MSA format file using Winston etc.
