Bubble Bobble (Firebird 1987)

Bubble Bobble is one of the all time greats and the ST version is one of the best conversions made. Although graphically Bubble Bobble is hardly going to set the world alight, it's the gameplay that matters and Bubble Bobble is on the verge of overflowing. You play on a single screen platform level. Using the bubbles that blow from your little Dragons mouth you must capture the enemies. Once their caught inside the bubble then you have to pop them before they escape. If they do then they go mad trying to get you. Once you've 'popped' all the monsters then you progress a level. Spend too long though and you have to face Baron Von Blubba an indestructable nasty who chases you until either you clear the screen or he gets you. Along the way through the 100 levels you can pick up a variety of bonuses including skip levels, bonus games, speed ups and a bonus that turns your breath to fire. Then there are the bubbles that float onto the screen that launch lightening at your opponents, or flood them. Phew all too much to mention here. Bubble Bobble is brilliant and Zogging Hell reckons you should ignore the Rainbow Islands hype and plump for this instead, it's simpler but more fun to play. Oh yes and special mention for the incredibly annoying but also very hummable theme tune, you won't be able to stop singing it for months.

Zogging Hell Rating: 93%

Cheats

During the game or so ST Action trys to tell us, hit the following function keys to advance a level or two:- 'F2' = Advance one level, 'F3' = advance six levels and 'F4' = advance eleven levels. Try it on your copy it might work, but it didn't with mine.
