SNES Games PagesOn this page are a list of games for the SNES and a review. These reviews are personal opinion so don't get upset if your favourite games are cursed. Currently this page only covers the games I own, so its extremely limited, if anyone out there feels like contributing (you will be acknowledged) it would be gratefully recieved. F-Zero
Definitive SNES racer. Amongst the launch line up and probably still never bettered by any of its successors. Beautiful graphics combined with sublime (and at times frustrating) gameplay and great tracker tunes, go together to make the ultimate SNES racing experience. The only downside is the lack of two player mode. But you can't have everything can you... Great fun. Zogging Hell Rating: 9/10
Streetfighter
2
The original version of the game. Totally unbelievable when it came out (I brought a SNES just for this game ( As I bet most people did)). Outstanding big graphics, excellent sounds, brilliant gameplay. Eight monster characters with four extra bosses and some lovely backgrounds. Looks a bit slow and colourless compared to its sequels, though its better in some respects, particularly the music area. Zogging Hell Rating: Compared to its sequels: 9/10. Compared to everthing else at the time: 10/10 (If that kind of makes sense, people)
Super
Star Wars
The 16 bit consoles programmers really knew how to make their platformers, this game is not the exception with beautiful scrolling graphics along with some of the best tracker music you'll hear. The last two levels are the biggest let down in this game, a dreadful mode 7 battle over the surface of the Deathstar and uncontrollable trench attack sequence. In my opinion these scenes should have been left alone as the Atari ST's vector graphic versions are unbeatable (mind you, thats all Atari ST Star Wars did, over and over again) Zogging Hell Rating: 9/10
Starwing
One of the SNES's 'killer' titles, Starwing was probably the best attempt at making the SNES do 3D. Although the 16bit computers had been doing it for years, and already had Epic as a standard for space 3D shoot'em ups (graphically that is), the SNES had a terrible little secret. It was a bit crap at 3D. Ok so Mode 7 is kind of 3D. Sort of anyway. But the SNES's graphic chips were made to push sprites around and its central processor was decidedly not up to the job. However the boys at Nintendo had a neat idea. To get round this problem they included a special chip on the cartridge known by the legend 'Special FX'. This boosted the SNES's 3D power to a reasonable level and Starwing (known elsewhere as Starfox) is the result. The end product is pretty good for a 16bit game, the graphics although fixed as a series of almost set pieces, work well and move smoothly. It's no where near as ambitious as Epic, but the gameplay seems to benefit from this rigidity. Movement is fluid and there is even a little bit of texture mapping now and again. As far as the gameplay goes it is generally pretty good, though starts to get very hard on the later levels. Barrel rolling an essential skill for survival in this game is a lot harder to pull off than with Lylat Wars its N64 sequel. Definitely one of the games you need to own for your SNES though. Super Streetfighter
2
The final proper Streetfighter game on the SNES and arguably still the best Streetfighter game available, extremely hard on the highest levels but definitely worth it. It features 4 xtra characters over Turbo ( so 16 playable fighters), numerous new fight modes and four new backgrounds. If you own Streetfighter 2 Turbo you'd have to be a fan to get it as the differences are very small and it lacks the ridiculous speed capabilities, but for owners of the original Streetfighter 2, like me, its well worth it....
