Sega Saturn Games and Cheats

Alien Trilogy

The game is based roughly on the first three episodes of what was the Alien Trilogy (Unsuprisingly!) and many of the scenes are lifted from the films.
The Saturn (and Playstations) answer to Alien Vs Predator on the Jag. Graphically theres no comparison. A vs P wins hands down. Sonically as well the mood is let down by lack lustre music and poor samples. However perhaps comparing it with the Jags showpiece game is unfair, they're both different types of first person shooters (Eh?). A vs P is more of a survive and explore type adventure, while Alien Trilogy is very much in the Doom mould requiring you to complete a series of missions and fufill various objectives.
Graphically the game is stuck between Doom and A vs P. The opening sequence looks good though it seems to be a bit of touched up film sequence from Aliens rather than a new composition. The game itself looks dated, it doesn't really succeed in looking a realistic as A vs P (the difference between the terrifyingly realistic face hugger in A vs P and the horrible pixely mess in Alien Trilogy underlines this). The guns in particular look awful and the way the character moves in the environment is unconvincing. Gameplay also not as exciting or as atmospheric as Doom or A vs P. However the levels are varied and interesting and and the Aliens (with the exception of face huggers) are nasty enough.
If you ignore these minor defaults (Sorry I had to mention them really), then your left with a old looking but fun first person blast that will quite happily fill several days of playing.

Bust a Move 2

Infuriating and fun puzzler, with Bub and Bob from that other infuriating and fun puzzler/ platformer Bubble Bobble. The game is sort of inbetween Tetris and Pick and Pile and is just as addictive as the former. Your character has to shoot coloured balls (or bubbles as the manual tells me) at other coloured balls in an attempt to get three of more touching. When this happens they dissapear. Various bounces and clever shots can cause lots of balls to dissapear.
The graphics are cute though hardly ground breaking and the tunes are very much in the Bubble Bobble annoying but catchy style. Altogether a load of fun, even for someone like me who doesn't really like puzzle games.

Daytona USA

Racing game. The first track is really good and the Saturn impresses with its speed and graphics. The second track demonstrates the games faults however with some dodgy car handling. Its still enjoyable in two player mode though. Should have been brilliant however, but its no Sega Rally.

Duke Nukem 3D

Pretty amusing Doom whanabe which owes quite a lot to the Evil Dead series of films Nukem talks endless nonense when he does things, and there are lots of interesting things to do as well as wasting things. Slightly dodgy in places, hence an 18 certificate, Nukem actually is capable of offering money to ladies in some places to um in Nukem's words "Shake it Baby". As far as the shooting part goes, its not quite as good as Doom.

Exhumed

Doom u like. Set in Egypt amongst the Temple of Karnak and other such archaeological delights, this first person shooter does much to impress. Its 3D handling is much better than in the frankly dodgy Alien Trilogy and Duke Nukem where the Saturn was trying hard to pretend its 3D graphics were worse than the SNES. The enemies for the first four levels are distinctly unimpressive however. The music is appropriate and jangly enough, but the sound effects are not up to Lobotomy's other game Duke Nukem. It lacks the genre's normal impressive range of weapons as well. Its still the best 3D shooter I've played on the Saturn.

Guardian Heroes

This game is not one you'll want to play if you require a little bit of a puzzle element in your games. Blatantly inspired by Golden Axe, it just involves smashing the poo out of everyone you meet. Graphics are not inspiring and the tunes do not fit with anything in the game. If you want to have an aimless smash around the head this might pass a hour or two but it lacks that one more go thing in Golden Axe, and also is spoiled by far to many interupting cut sequences.

Sega Rally

Sega's showpiece Saturn driving game. I still remember how impressive it looked on its release. Age hasn't treated it all that well in the graphics department however. Sega's crap attempts at transparency in the car windows look terrible. The music is reasonable if cheesey and the sound effects are convincing enough. Gameplay is still good, the car handling in a much less frustrating way than more recent rally games like V- Rally 99 on the N64. On the other hand the tiny amount of tracks, three (or four if you enter a code) means the game soon gets a bit repetitive. I must say I've changed my mind about this though, and my original comments in this review and rating were much to harsh. Its still is a classic. I must have got out on the wrong side of bed or something.

Sega Touring Car Championship

Reasonably good racing game. The handling is in the classic Sega Rally mould even though its a good deal harder to get into. Much better than the comparable Daytona USA.

ShellShock

Decidedly dodgy in racial terms tank blaster. Its boring as hell as well, though if handling tanks is your thing then it might be for you. Graphics are adequete, and the music is actually quite brilliant, but there is little else in this game to recommend.

Streetfighter Alpha

Not quite up to Super Street Fighter levels on the SNES, but pretty good none the less. 12 Fighters are available in this one with seven being totally new. The lack of some old favourites such as Vega, Zangief and Dahlsim let it down. Graphically its only slightly superior, and the music is not as good. The fighters are more balanced, however, there's definitely no-one as rubbish as Zangief. The new Alpha super special moves are fairly spectacular and can practically finish a fight in seconds. Which is a pain when your on the receiving end. Its still the king.

Streetfighter Alpha 2

Now this is more like it better, dare I say it, than Super Streetfighter 2 on the SNES. The graphics are much more impressive, with loads more backgrounds (18 in total plus a few extras) 18 characters in total, with the return of Dahlsim and Zangief (still no Vega or Blanka, Boo), plus all the secret fighters from Streetfighter Alpha. New custom combo moves that kick ass, and a whole load more. The weirdest part is the Streetfighter Gallery, with Alpha art work. Some of the art-work is suspect to say the least with one scene showing Bison in some sort of dodgy activity... A Classic and I can't wait to play Alpha 3.

Virtua Fighter 2

A technical fighting game triumph for the Saturn, and the best 3D fighting game I've played on the 32/64 bit generation of consoles. It makes Fight for Life on the Jag look crude, outplays (and looks as good as) the monolithic Tekken (1 to 800) on the Playstation and gives the feeble attempts at Beat em ups on the N64 the duffing up they truely deserve. It looks amazing and plays better. Despite having owned a N64 for several months I still had to gulp when I saw the graphics of this game. The only thing that would make this game better is simpler to initiate special attacks, and a few more exciting ones like fireballs etc. Other then that flawless.

Wipeout

Wipeout always seemed like a poor man's (or rich but stupid!) version of F- Zero to me. People raved about the graphics and sound, but the few brief experiences I had had with it had left me feeling cold (But what do you expect from Psygnosis, a company that always put style before playability: think Shadow of the Beast on the ST!). On a second look though Wipeout seems to have matured quite well with age (or I've just got rich and stupid!). The gameplay is certainly more fun than I remembered. Tracks are plentiful and varied enough, though the lack of proper different difficulty settings is a bit annoying to anyone like me who doesn't want to spend weeks learning how to take all the corners perfectly in the game. Not bad at all.

World Cup Golf

Graphically it must have been nice when it came out but now it just looks dodgy. It also has far to many faults to play a decent game of golf though and there are better games on the Atari ST and Amiga. The graphics seem to have come before being able to see the lie of the ground and the you cannot look round the course at will. O.K. for a quick play with your friends but don't be expecting miracles.
A hole in one is definitely off the cards....

X- Men, Children of the Atom

Slightly flawed beat em up in the Streetfighter style by Acclaim and the masters of the genre Capcom. Its clear that Capcom were not as involved as much as they should have been though as the game's difficultly levels are indifferent no matter which one you put them on. The game lacks strategy as well and is not as inspired, despite its Streetfighter connection. Two player its at its best with spectacular if limited special moves. Not bad but it is not anywhere near Streetfighter, its more along the levels of Double Dragon V on the Jag, as in nice try but flawed.
