History
Born about
a year after the Ploystation, the N64 nearly died during infancy thanks
to its continued support for the cartridge format. This made it expensive
for games to be developed and the Nintendo faltered due to slow games
production (something that had killed the last 64bit the Jaguar). Despite
a good opening line up including Mario 64, a ground breaking 3D platformer
and Mario Kart 64 it wasn't until the release of the incredible Goldeneye
that Nintendo actually began making a profit on their new baby. Goldeneye
probably single handedly saved the console and with the release of Turok
2, Lylat Wars and F- Zero X the machine now had a plethora of incredible
games with which to assault the console world. Well sort of. The N64 still
never had the kind of support the Ploystation had, which is a shame, though
it held in there for far longer than expected.
