Chequered Flag

HHHMMMMM... This could have been brilliant but it doesn't quite work. The graphics in their Cybermorph style are good in that old skool 3D way of things (Cars exepted. Tyres with corners, what's that all about?), and they are fairly comparable with the game that Chequered Flag was designed to clone.. Virtua Racer. However, unfortunately the game is let down by the crap control system (which tries to emulate analogue control using a digital method... er durr, how many analogue controllers has the Jag got?). This is complemented by strange oppostion AI that seems to be able to catch you up when you don't crash and are having the perfect race but are incapable of leaving you behind when you can't even stay on the road for five seconds. Oh and poor sound effects and cheesy music don't help at all. Unbelievably this is the product of the makers of Alien Vs Predator and Skyhammer, Rebellion. It is feasable that with decent enemy A.I. and analogue controller instead of a digital one, Chequered Flag could have been quite excellent and if you take the time to master the dodgy controls it can still be a reasonable game. Unfortunately as it is, it is playable, but only just.
