Protector SE Oh god not another update! Yep Defender is in for its second update on the Jag. As if Defender 2000 wasn't an update too far anyway. It's a pity that half the games on this console are updates of some decidedly '80s games and not original ones. Tempest 2000.. fair enough, it was enough of an update to be worthwhile, but Defender has it's upgrade limits. It was a game that was stuck in the realm of 2D and there's not a lot that could really be done to it to bring into the next millenium. Not that there's anything wrong with Defender as such, it is and always will be a classic. And there's nothing wrong with Protector either, it's about the best version of Defender that can be done! Infinitely superior to Minter's Defender 2000, Protector is a class 2D game and oozes the care and attention that has been so lovingly lavished upon it. If you like Defender you'll like this. No question. So what's wrong then, why is Zogging Hell a grumpy little bunny. Well it's this. While the Saturn and Playstation were busy breaking new boundaries with each new game the Jag, which had started seemingly well, descended into re-make territory. The games the Jaguar re-made had sold consoles once, most notably the Jaguars almighty predecessor, the Atari VCS. However by this time they were old hat, both in terms of gameplay and graphics. Making some pretty looking 2D updates of some ancient games were never going to sell Jaguars, no matter how good they were. Tempest 2000, despite being one of the finest games ever created, was never going to compete with Ridge Racer or Tomb Raider. Games like Skyhammer and Alien Vs Predator were next generation. Games like this were very much last generation. Anyway I seem to be going onto rant mode, so time to rap things up. If you like to buy polished very good versions of old arcade classics then this is for you. If you prefer your games to be different then steer well clear..
