Super Burnout

Super Burnout is regarded by many as the best racing game on the Jag. It's basically a super powered Super Hang On clone, in fact it might as well be a sequel. It's certainly the most polished. It lacks high technical ambitions, the graphics are very much in the SNES's era, although the track appears to be 'proper' 3D (and looks very nice when compared to most of the Jags offerings (Chequered Flag, hmmm). The background graphics and scenery are all 2D but most have been so well that they look more convincing than the real 3D of World Tour Racing. If there is a let down it's the bikes, that although being animated quite well, look decidedly unrealistic. The game has a rather dissapointing one on one two player mode, where the sprite of your bike stays the same size as in the one player game, and subsequently blocks most of your view of the road. Music is suprisingly good for a Jaguar cartridge game, unfortunately the SFX are highly dissapointing, the roar of the crowd as you zoom past the stands being the only good point. The sound of your engine is so rubbish it defies belief.
Handling and control are for the most part excellent, and the game overall has a feel of polishing missing from a lot of Jaguar games. There is however one nasty bug. Using manual gears with one bike results in absolutely no accelleration in first gear. Your bike just sits there. Changing gear into second gets you going but, of course, the accelleration is so slow that you've loss the race before you've started. Big dissapointment that. Whilst I'm moaning, what's with the name of the bikes, Super Rabbit and Killer Turtle, they must be having a laugh. Finally the accidents, which need to be pretty spectacular in motorbike games, as this is part of the fun, are very lack lustre. Just a simple bloke flying over the handle bars jobby. Booo.
Other than that Super Burnout's very good. Beating the fastest times is certainly addictive, and there are a reasonable amount of tracks to master. The Jag puts up some stiff competition when you race it, which is always nice. I personally wouldn't rate it the best Jag racer, World Tour is more fun, more Sega Rally like and is much more of a challenge, if not as polished. Atari Karts is more addictive in the outset while you are trying to collect all the carts and finish all the leagues. But Super Burnout pees on Chequered Flag and others from a great height and is definitely one for the collection.
