Raiden along with Trevor Mcfur in the Crescent Galaxy was originally intended
for Atari's abortive Panther console. Hence saying that it doesn't quite
exploit the full potential of the Jag would be an understatement. Raiden
is fortuantly a lot better than Crescent Galaxy, and is quite a decent
vertical scrolling shoot'em-up. It's an arcade perfect conversion, right
down to the two player mode and the ridiculously large, and screen shrinkingly
oppressive, points and lifes panel. Yes it is a bit big, a third of a
screen wasted on something that could have quite nicely fitted on a line
across the top. But hey, it was in the arcade as well, so what can you
do. Gameplay wise it's very sound (providing you like vertical shooters)
and is very reminscent of Sidewinder on the 16bit. It's not quite a Xenon
2 beater, but then what is?
This game would have been a good Panther release, but it isn't really
up to launch material for the Jaguar, it's certainly not the type of next
generation game all Jag owners were looking for.
