Alien Vs Predator

The Jag's show piece game. AvP is a Doom u like with a difference, where-as Doom organises itself into different levels and is quick to get into, AvP tries to present a image of one continous massive level. AvP is huge and err.. slow to get into. I actually think this change is actually quite refreshing and it adds to the plot. I first got the game second hand with no instruction manual, when I first played the game I had no idea what was going on. This merely added to the atmosphere as I spent the first couple of goes running away from Aliens and getting killed alot. This brings us to the graphics, they're brilliant, though they seem a little jerky at first with a Pal display (something that you don't notice ever again if you play it for more than ten minutes). Sound in the game is appropriate and moody, and the lack of in-game music seems to make things much more tense.

The game is really split into three roles a Colonial Marine (aka Aliens), the Predator or an Alien. You can play as one of these three characters and the objectives in the game change accordingly. Playing as the Marine is the most conventional way of playing. You must move through the entire ship collecting weapons and security passes with the ultimate goal of detonating the ship's nuclear reactor and escaping in the ships escape pod. As the Predator you start at the top level in the Predator ship and must move downwards, upgrading your weapons by butchering people/aliens, with the ultimate goal of killing the Alien queen and taking her skull. The Alien starts at the bottom level in the murky depths of the Alien infested ship and must move get to the Predator ship in order to save the Queen who is being held captive there. By far the easiest and interesting way to play is with the Predator, and the hardest is probably as the Alien. But all three scenarios are gripping and atmospheric.

This is probably the finest Jaguar game out there and definitely one to get hold of.

Prototype Screenshots

Here are a couple of screen shots from the Beta version of A Vs P, notice the slightly different weapons, an apparent inventory on the left side. Also notice the much more realistic and scary Aliens (why did they change them for the final release, these guys are much more frightening).
