The Atari XL was Atari's replacement for the 400/800 series (and boy did they need replacing!). The Atari XL is instantly more pleasing on the eye and although, in retrospect perhaps, brown wasn't perhaps the best colour, it is a very nice machine indeed. There were three versions of the XL for the various specifications that users required. The most common, the 800XL, was the middle specification model and directly replaced the 800. Features included a built in basic, which like the BBC micro, was the most a casual user would see.
