

The
Atari XL was Atari's replacement for the 400/800 series (and boy did they
need replacing!). The Atari XL is instantly more pleasing on the eye and
although, in retrospect perhaps, brown wasn't perhaps the best colour,
it is a very nice machine indeed. There were three versions of the XL
for the various specifications that users required. The most common, the
800XL, was the middle specification model and directly replaced the 800.
Features included a built in basic, which like the BBC micro, was the
most a casual user would see.

programmers have managed to get 256 or even 4096 colours from the chip.
